Ciao, il mio nome è David Collier e sono di Sydney, Australia. Vivo a circa 12 chilometri dal centro della città, a Maroubra, che si trova sulle spiagge orientali. E ‘un luogo ideale per vivere il mare, un luogo molto vivace e multiculturale, con un buon clima e siamo fortunati ad avere un posto così felice dove vivere. Lavoro nel settore della pubblicità come produttore di stampa e art buyer, che prevede l’organizzazione di diversi progetti di stampa, così come alcuni scatti con fotografi professionisti. Preferisco lavorare sui miei progetti la maggior parte del tempo, ma ho svolto e svolgo anche lavori su commissione.
Let’s introduce yourself
Hi I am David Collier from Sydney Australia. I live about 12 kilometers from the centre of Sydney at Maroubra, which is on the eastern beaches. It is a great place to live by the ocean, a very vibrant and multicultural place with a good climate and we are lucky to have a happy place to live. I work in the advertising industry as a print producer and art buyer, which involves organizing various print printing projects as well as some shoots with professional photographers. I prefer to work on my own projects most of the time but have done and do some commission work.
La fotografia nella tua vita: come e perchè?
La mia prima macchina fotografica mi è stata regalata quando avevo 14 anni, una Olympus OM1, ma non avevo ancora davvero capito fotografia. Ho ripreso sul serio a scattare circa 5 anni fa, con l’acquisto di alcuni accessori sia per la reflex digitale che per la mia OM1 che, ancora oggi, sono molto. Non ho frequentato alcun corso, sono praticamente un autodidatta, anche se in realtà ho un paio di maestri che mi hanno aiutato lungo il percorso. Ho una collezione di macchine fotografiche a pellicola e mi diverto molto fare nuove sperimentazioni con queste, imparare tecniche diverse per poi vedere che risultati ottengo.
Photography in your life: how and why?
My first camera was given to me when I was about 14, an Olympus OM1 but I did not really understand photography. I really only picked it up again about 5 years ago, buying some DSLR grear as well as fixing the OM1 which I still use a lot today. I have not completed any courses so pretty much self taught. I do have a couple of mentors who have helped me along the way which has helped. I have a collection of film cameras so I am always having fun learning about them and experimenting to see what results I get.

Il tuo ultimo progetto, come tu stesso mi hai detto, riguarda l’acqua e l’oceano. Vorresti raccontarci com’è nata quest’idea e in che modo hai realizzato il progetto?
Ho comprato una fotocamera impermeabile NikonosV analogica, 35 mm, solo per divertimento e per vedere come funzionava. Come dicevo vivo molto vicino alla spiaggia, quindi spesso posso raggiungerla e già nei primi scatti ho potuto notare dei grandi risultati. Mi piace come la luce reagisce e rifrange all’interno dell’ambiente sottomarino e lo sguardo a volte nuvoloso o torbida l’acqua. Mi piace anche l’idea di essere in un altro mondo, un mondo subacqueo, ma anche considerare la relazione tra sotto e sopra l’acqua. Scatto in diversi momenti, la mattina presto o nel tardo pomeriggio, il che dà diverse angolazioni ai raggi di luce. Recentemente ho scattato nel bel mezzo della giornata, ed è un momento in cui la luce scende verso il fondo creando un effetto ancora differente. Attualmente qui è estate, il che mi permette di lavorare al mio progetto anche nei prossimi mesi, per poi realizzare un’esposizione a Sydney.
Your recent project, as you said, it’s involves water and the ocean. Would you like to tell us how you did this idea and how you made this project?
I bought a NikonosV 35mm waterproof film camera just for fun and to see how it worked. As I live right near the beach, went down took some photos and from the first roll I could see some great results. I like how the light reacts and refracts within the underwater environment and the sometimes cloudiness or murky look to the water. I also like the idea of underwater being another world but also considering the relationship between under and over the water. I shoot at different times, early morning or late afternoon which gives great light angles. Recently I shot in middle of the day, this gives some top to bottom light and a different look again. It is summer for us now so I have plenty of time to pursue this over the next few months and then have an exhibition in Sydney.
Come descriveresti il tuo modo di fotografare, il tuo stile?
Questa è una domanda difficile… tutto quello che posso dire è che guardo le cose intorno a me immaginandole come una fotografia e se sembrano belle, molto probabilmente lo sono. Ovviamente mi piace quando la gente apprezza le mie foto, ma prima di tutto devono soddisfare me stesso, questa è la mia preoccupazione principale. Forse le mie foto possono parlare, raccontare loro stesse il mio stile.
Could you describe your own way to take pictures, your style?
This is a hard one but all I can say is I am always looking at things as a photograph, if it looks good well it probably does. Of course I love it when people like my photos, but I have to like it first and that is what matters to me. Perhaps let my photos maybe speak, as to style.
Stai lavorando a qualche progetto in questo momento, o hai in mente qualcosa per il futuro?
Oltre al progetto sull’acqua, ho in mente altri piccoli progetti. Uno è il mio soggetto “Goatman”, come anche il progetto sulla caduta libera di “Colin” un manichino: si tratta di una festa a cui partecipano persone che fotografano e filmano Colin mentre cade a strapiombo da una montagna in mare. La location ancora è segreta. Ho la mente piena di altre idee e sicuramente qualcosa ne uscirà. Ho anche un piano a lungo termine e sogno di fare una vera performance artistica.
Are you working on some project right now or are you keeping in mind something for the future?
Apart from the water project, I have a few other small projects in progress. One is my character “Goatman” as well as a project involving a cliff diving fall of “Colin” who is a manaquin, a party with everyone coming to see him go off a cliff and filming and photographing the event. The location is a secret for now. I also have a head full of muddled up ideas so sure something will be coming up. I also have a long term plan and dream to do a performance art piece.
Segui i lavori di qualche fotografo in particolare come fonte di ispirazione?
Sì, trovo ispirazioni da diversi altri fotografi, facendo sempre attenzione a non copiare, ma utilizzando questo per trarne delle mie interpretazioni. Alcuni fotografi che mi piacciono sono Andrew Quilty, Tamara Dean Byrne e Luke Byrne che sono australiani. Tengo d’occhio anche un sacco di fotografi europei e americani.
Did you get inspired by the work/style of some photographer?
Yes I get a lot of inspiration from other photographers, but always careful not to copy but to use this to make my interpretations. A few photographers I like are Andrew Quilty, Tamara Dean and Luke Byrne who are Aussies. I also keep a good eye on lots of Euro and US photographers as well.
