Let’s Introduce yourself
I’m Lúa, I was born in Vigo (Galicia, Spain) in 1982. For almost eight years I live in Barcelona, I came here to finish my degree in chemistry and then I stayed. I like this city, having the sea nearby and I enjoy the beauty of autumn and spring seasons. I try to live as close as I can of Photography, both personally and professionally.

Photography  in your life: how and why?
I affirm that I started stumbling with this of the photography 7 years ago but the truth is that I know recognize the beginning of almost nothing that manages to be important in my life. The photography it is. I reside in Barcelona, it was here where I combined my studies in the IEFC _Institut d’Estudis Fotogràfics de Catalunya with my absolute predisposition for the autolearning, prioritizing my own experience and “to be” behind the camera.

Tell us three things you like without think too much of.
I like breakfast when sun shines.
I like fresh sheets on the bed.
I like to cook while I drink a glass of wine.

How would you describe your own way to take pictures, your style?
I capture what I feel is a part of myself and my immediate environment; most of my projects are the combination of the anonymous elements within a fundamentally intimate setting. My goal is that no one feels like a stranger when looking at my photographs though they are all self-portraits, and hope  that’s what makes them unique.

Subtle elements, intimacy and nostalgia are all important aspects of my work. The word that describes my images I think is “personal”.

I feel much more comfortable working with analogue equipment, I spend many hours in the lab and many more hours with Polaroid Transfers, Emulsion Transfers as well as Image Transfers. For me the “photographic process” is from the moment the image is inside of me until I have the copy in my hand. Sensitive materials bring me closer to the image, digital separates me.

For me “pre-shot thought” is important, and I feel that that thought in the analogue world is more relevant than in the digital.

Would you like to choose one of your photo projects and tell us briefly what was the creative process for its creation?
Usually my work is divided in two, projects and seriesThe projects are those collections of images that I think about over time (months or years). I take a lot of time over each photograph in this group. The series is a group of photographs of specific moments: a journey, a specific place, and the shots often more sporadic with a common thread as the “point in time”.

Both series and projects I shoot, develop, scan and edit myself. I try not to delay any of these phases, and complete the process before starting new work.

A project very important for me is Rainstorming [35mm Film Photography b&n], this project have arisen from the urge to do a special retrospective of my work from 2007 until today. Six years contained in pictures  where time and location are emptied of significance.

Assuming that everything that emerges from the same point shares something in common, the very creative origin, I decided to make this collection of photographs. My perspective looks at the the origin, a subjective view of how I feel different spaces and details of what surrounds me. In these pictures, the view through the camera transcends rationality to become incorporeal. And it is in this dream world, in this intangible universe, where these photographs start fitting one close to another, like shots of the same path that I have walked time and time again without realizing that it was already a known land.

When it comes to portray this imaginary world, the fact that these photographs were taken at different points in time is no longer an impediment to the images’ cohesion. Here the emotional comes first, that is, the sensitive over the sensorial qualities, what the snapshot transmits more than its content.

The visual discourse of these photographs is alive, it comes and goes, it is almost like a labyrinth, with dark corners, sinister, full of nostalgia and echo. With a timeless essence, we do not know if it is true or a dream, past, present or future.

Are you working on some project right now or are you keeping  in mind something for the future?
I also working on my project shared “La memoria del papel”, hopefully in a few weeks is more advanced. A few months ago I started also a project breaking photographs (click here), and some other manipulations over images..

And my photos, always, every week, photos.

What is currently your biggest desire in a professional environment?
My dream photographic project doesn’t exist. That’s the best of it. I don’t posess a sense of having some great purpose to fulfill. If I could be behind a camera all my life, then I have managed to live a dream. But yes, I would like the photographic world give me some money sometimes, because too I need eat!

” There will never be another you”.

As final step, would you like to suggest us a song ?
Any song by Chet Baker, for example.. “There will never be another you”.

Thank you very much Lúa for telling us something about you!
